City Removing Asbestos, Mercury From Decommissioned Griffy Plant

The City of Bloomington Utilities department continues to work on removing mercury and asbestos at the decommissioned Griffy Lake treatment plant. Last night, the Utilities Service Board approved a $187,000 amendment to its existing contract with V.E.T. Environmental Engineering. The original contract was to handle the plant’s demolition. A groundwater plume contaminated with the chlorinated solvent tetrachloroethene, or PCE, has led the EPA to designate the city of Spencer’s municipal well field – which provides water to approximately 9,900 residents- a Superfund Site.
