369 Indiana schools — and 94% of the state’s public schools — are requesting hand-held metal detectors for the coming school year; Researchers at Indiana University have developed a new tool to help first-responders determine when and where a landslide may strike; City of Bloomington Utilities Director Vic Kelson reports the new, south central sewer interceptor is flowing; Bloomington residents will have free access to the Mills Park pool this summer on days where the forecast temperature is 90 degrees or higher; Submissions are being accepted for the Bloomington Community Farmers Market’s 30th annual Salsa Contest.

FEATURE
Earlier this month, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency moved to loosen a 2015 regulation regarding coal ash disposal.  The state of Indiana produces seven million tons of coal ash each year, and it’s the state with the most coal ash ponds in the country. Dr. Indra Frank is the Director of Environmental Health and Water Quality for the Hoosier Environmental Council. She says the EPA’s changes set up Indiana for more groundwater contamination,  and will reduce the number of contaminated sites that get cleaned up. Dr. Frank spoke with WFHB News Director Wes Martin about the EPA rule changes.
