State Budget Projections May Put Teacher Salary Increases on the Chopping Block

The Indiana House of Representatives’ current spending bill is half a billion dollars short, according to the latest estimation by the Revenue Forecast Technical Committee.

The forecast for fiscal year 2020 was presented to the state budget committee, yesterday. It includes a $30 million revision from December’s projection. That’s still nowhere near the $600 million difference between what the technical committee expects to receive over 2020, and what the state legislature’s current budget bill looks to spend.

The House passed its budget plan on Tuesday, allocating some $34.6 billion for the next two years. That number is well over the Technical Committees revenue forecast of $33.5 billion.

That is a difference of about $1 billion in total for what the state is projected to bring in and what it plans on spending. In today’s Feature Report, we heard from State Senator Mark Stoops, who says the revenue shortfall could scuttle efforts to raise teacher salaries.
