Daisy Garton Spring Plein Air Paint Out at the Hinkle-Garton Farmstead

On Saturday May 18, 2019, plein air painters will be gathering at the Hinkle-Garton Farmstead
on East 10th Street at the invitation of Bloomington Restorations, Inc. (BRI).  Members of the
Bloomington Watercolor Society (BWS), the Upland Plein Air Painters (“UP”) and Artists from
Brown County Arts Alliance will all gather at 2920 E. 10th Street, Bloomington, IN 47408 to
enjoy the arrival of spring and the chance to paint outdoors again. Paintings will be created May
18th on location at the historic Hinkle-Garton Farmstead, that include two historic homes, farm
land, gardens and outbuildings, after which will be on display inside the 1892 Queen Anne style
homestead monthly beginning with the May 25 th Farmstead Open Day. Paintings will be
available for purchase Saturday, May 25 th at the Farmstead and at subsequent monthly Open
Days and events throughout the summer.  Individual artists will donate twenty-five percent of the
proceeds from the art sales to pay for restoration of the Hinkle-Garton Farmhouse.

The Hinkle property was settled in 1886 and grew to 82 acres which included a dairy farm and
later a flower farm. As the city of Bloomington grew, land was sold to various buyers such as the
Illinois Central Railroad.  In addition, land was sold for the building of the United States Post
Office and to developers for an apartment complex. The Farmstead today contains 11 acres.

Daisy Hinkle Garton was born on the Farmstead in 1908 and remained connected to it for the
rest of her life until her death in 2003.   In the 1940s Daisy and her husband Joe Garton moved
back to the Farmstead. Daisy and Joe had both studied music at Indiana University. Upon their
return, Joe taught in the Indianapolis schools and Daisy taught in the Bloomington Schools and
also gave private lessons in the home. Daisy loved the land, her students and tenants, art and
sharing her heritage with others.  Upon her death she left the property in her trust to a not-for-
profit organization that would preserve the Farmstead and operate a museum within the main
rooms of the first floor of the farmhouse. The Farmstead retains history and by-gone charm, as
visitors will discover as they explore the house and grounds.

Artists who have been invited to paint are excited about the opportunity to bring life to canvas
and paper with images that recall the times, the flowers, the music and the historical buildings of
the Hinkle-Garton Farmstead.  We hope you will come and share these images with us on May
18th from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and discover spring at the Farmstead. BRI members will be
present to assist with questions and information on the Paint Out, Farmstead and BRI activities.

Three of her completed pieces are on exhibit at the Education Center through the month of April.

Workshop Description:

During this 2-part workshop, participants will learn to identify invasive plants, process them into pulp for papermaking, then make paper. Participants can attend Part 1 or Part 2, or both!

Part 1: Thursday, April 18, 5-7pm

We will examine the characteristics of various invasive plants of South Central Indiana. We will then turn the plants into paper pulp by steaming the bark, scraping it, cooking it, and beating it.

Part 2: Saturday, April 20, 1-4pm

We will use this pulp to make sheets of paper, as it has been done for centuries. We will also explore pulp painting, by combining different colors of plant materials to create designs and images.

Two Great Choral Masterworks of the 20th Century with Orchestra

On Saturday evening, April 13, 2019, Bloomington Chamber Singers will present two of the great French choral-orchestral works of the 20th century: Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, op. 9, and Francis Poulenc’s Stabat Mater, FP 148.

The Requiem was composed in 1947 at the end of World War II. Like Fauré’s Requiem, the work focuses not on hell and damnation, but instead on images of consolation in the face of loss. The chants of the Roman Catholic Missa pro defunctis (Requiem Mass) form the melodic basis of the work, ancient melodies enriched by gentle harmonies and tender orchestral colors. Duruflé explains: “This Requiem is not an ethereal work which sings of detachment from human concerns. It reflects, in the unchanging form of Christian prayer, the anguish of man faced with the mystery of his final end.”

Poulenc’s Stabat Mater was composed in 1950 in response to the death of his friend, the artist Christian Bérard; he considered writing a Requiem for Bérard, but, after returning to the shrine of the Black Virgin of Rocamadour, Poulenc selected as his text the Stabat Mater, an ancient Latin hymn that reflects on Mary’s sorrow as she witnessed the Crucifixion. The piece, scored for soprano solo, mixed chorus, and orchestra, premiered in 1951 at the Strasbourg Festival. This work won the New York Critics’ Circle Award for Best Choral Work of the year. Poulenc considered it his finest composition.

Don’t miss this rare event performed by Bloomington area musical artists, 55 vocalists and full orchestra.

Adult Tickets $20.00 / Student $5.00 with Student ID. Children 18 and under free.

Kath Bloom+ Kate Long @ Landlocked Music

Kath Bloom + Kate Long

Weds May 1 • FREE! • 6-8pm @ Landlocked Music 115 S. Walnut St.

For fans of the song and how to feel it. Kath Bloom is some kind of legend. She comes from a special place where country, blues and folk are made beautifully translucent and emotive. She has a special gift – her voice is delicate and tender, yet retains that raw emotion and hard worn truths that allows each sung word to be felt.

The more you hear of Kath Bloom, the more you notice it’s not just the arresting voice, but the power of the songwriting. “Beautiful” is the typical response—the kind of beauty that comes from truth, musical and the deeply lyrical. There are no good comparisons, but if you like the deep well of Emmylou Harris, the more poignant lyrics of Lou Reed, the joy of Joni Mitchell, you’re kinda in the right zone. In reality, she’s simply Kath Bloom: horse whisperer, vocalist, mum, songwriter and a beautiful person.

This performance is part of an ongoing series of programs at Landlocked Music in 2019 created with the help of the Bloomington Urban Enterprise Association Zone Arts Grant Program.

LANDLOCKED HAS MOVED! Please note our new address on South Walnut Street as of Jan 1, 2019!
