Just after 9 p.m. last night, Bloomington police shut down what had been a make-shift homeless shelter in a city-owned parking garage on Fourth Street. Homeless people and advocates had used the third floor of the garage as a temporary shelter on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Police allowed the group to sleep until about 6 a.m., and representatives from the shelter said they cleaned up each morning. But as the group prepared for its fourth night in the garage, word came from the city government that the informal shelter would be closed. Police were there to greet the homeless when they arrived. Assistant News Director Joe Crawford was at the scene, and he brings us this report for today’s WFHB feature exclusive.
