Yesterday, Governor Mike Pence initialed Senate Bill 1, now called SEA 1, dubbed the School Safety Bill, which established a state agency to award grants to local school bodies to fund school security-related personnel, equipment and/or studies. The original legislation was introduced shortly after the Sandy Hook Connecticut school shooting and was limited to one time, two year state grants, of up to fifty thousand dollars, to local school bodies, which had to provide matching funds to pay for armed police in schools. Since then, the legislation was changed to expand its budget considerably, broaden its use beyond paying for police in schools, and establish permanent state agencies to administer the funding program, and study school safety more generally. Daily Local News correspondent David Murphy spoke to Bloomington Democratic Senator Mark Stoops about the bill for today’s daily local news feature exclusive.
