Monroe County and City of Bloomington Host Joint Discussion for the Future of Convention Center

Monroe Convention Center opened in 1991 in the Graham Auto Sales building (built in 1923) at the corner of West 3rd Street and South College Avenue. Even then, local tourism officials argued it needed to be larger to attract even medium-size conventions. Now, though, some officials wonder if this is the right time to expand. | Photo by Limestone Post

During the November 9th discussion of the City and County Convention Center, members of the joint discussion sparred over whether to move forward with the convention center as a 501-c non-profit or as a capital improvement board. County Councilor Georff McKim provided his preference for the future of the convention center.

Mayor John Hamilton said he looks forward to the expansion of the convention center, hoping it becomes a 501-c non-profit.

Mayor Hamilton expressed concern about what he perceived as a lack of public notice at the latest county commissioners meeting where the commissioners voted unanimously on an ordinance relating to the convention center.

County Commissioner Penny Githens pushed back against Mayor Hamilton’s comments, saying she believes a capital improvement board would be the best course of action.

Bloomington City Council member Susan Sandberg said she wants to move forward with the proposal for a capital improvement board, because she believes that the process would provide greater transparency.

City Council member Sue Sgambelluri asked the members of the joint meeting how each entity feels regarding whether or not they want to move forward with the convention center as a non-profit or a capital improvement board. County Commissioner Julie Thomas said the commissioners voted 3-0 in favor of a CIB indicating their preference. Thomas elaborated on the perspective of the commissioners.

During public comment, President of the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce Erin Spoonmore said that either approach would work for the chamber. He applauded the joint members for making progress on the future of the convention center.

The City and County Convention Center Discussion will happen again on an as-needed basis.
