Monroe County Council

The Monroe County Council met on February 27th. During Department Updates, Parks and Recreation Director Kelli Witmer gave the council an update on their Solar Eclipse preparations.

Next, the County Commissioners spoke to the council on their preferences for the new jail. First, Commissioner Lee Jones spoke on the cost of waiting to start construction on the new jail.

Commissioner Julie Thomas said that after community listening sessions, they have decided to look at a new location for the future jail, and emphasized the importance of making a decision sooner rather than later.

Next, the council heard reports from the Sheriff’s Department. Jail Commander Kyle Gibbons shared the latest numbers of inmates.

Chief Deputy Phil Parker shared with the council a few examples of why they need a new facility rather than updating the current jail.

Parker also shared updates on their preparations for the Solar Eclipse.

The next Monroe County Council meeting will be held on March 12th, 2024.
