During the March 13th meeting of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, Jail Commander Kyle Gibbons provided an update on the conditions of the current jail.

Gibbons touched on mental health initiatives for inmates inside the jail. He also said that the jail is fully staffed at the moment.

Then, the commissioners heard a contract with VET Environmental Engineering for an environmental site assessment at a property on Hunter Valley Road and West State Road 46. The commissioners are considering the property as a potential site for a new jail. Administrator Angie Purdie presented the agreement.

Commissioner Lee Jones expressed relief that the board is moving forward with its efforts to build a new jail after the city council voted down a rezone request by the commissioners for a jail site north of Fullerton Pike back in late 2022.

Commissioner Penny Githens says that she supports the measure. She said the timeline is critical, because in her view the current jail conditions are not adequate.

The commissioners unanimously approved the contract with VET Environmental Engineering in the amount of $4,750. The Monroe County Board of Commissioners will meet again on March 27th.
