WFHB Local News – July 18, 2022

Play

This is the WFHB Local News for Monday, July 18th, 2022.

Later in the program, we have an excerpt from Big Talk – a one-on-one conversation with some of Bloomington’s most fascinating people – on WFHB. More in today’s feature report. Also coming up in the next half hour, we have some recent prison related news and announcements from the producers of Kite Line – our public affairs program devoted to prison issues in the Midwest and beyond.

Monroe County Council

At the Monroe County Council meeting on July 12th.

Council Member Peter Iverson gave an update from the Convention and Visitor’s Center Board. He said that the convention center has been successful lately but does not have enough space to meet demand.

Dave Shilling asked the council to approve additional funding for the Legal Department’s Litigation and Litigation Deduction Lines.

The council voted to approve the appropriation of funds with council member Marty Hawke voting no, and Council Member Geoff McKim abstaining due to a conflict of interest.

The next meeting will be held on August 9th.

Bloomington Arts Commission

Assistant Director for the Arts Holly Warren gave an update on the Bloomington Arts Commission’s financial status and the Art Feasibility Study at their meeting on July 13th.

First Warren outlined how much the commission has spent, and how much is left for the Fall grant cycle.

Warren shared findings of the Art Feasibility Study done by Trahan Architects. Warren said there were three main takeaways Trahan found from the focus groups and surveys.

Commission Member Nick Blandford commented that although Indiana University has the facilities he did not think IU would be willing to share their performance spaces with the public.

Warren said that the Office of the Mayor wanted Trahan to look into the Convention Center to attract more people to town, and to introduce them to Bloomington’s art scene. She emphasized that there are no final decisions to be made yet.

The next Bloomington Arts Commission meeting will be held on August 10th.
