But first, your local headlines:

Bloomington City Council

The Bloomington City Council discussed amendments to the Bloomington Municipal Code regarding Council standing committees. City Clerk Nicole Bolden described the changes during the February 17th City Council meeting.

Council member Isabel Piedmont-Smith presented an amendment to the ordinance regarding fiscal impact statements. She mentioned some council members saw value in keeping the fiscal impact statement requirement.

Council members approved the first amendment. Council member Sue Sgameblluri presented a second amendment regarding standing committee referrals.

Sgambeluri stated the amendment would still allow the council to overturn the president’s referral to a standing committee if seen unfit. Council member Matt Flaherty stated his opposition to the amendment.

Council member Piedmont-Smith stated any piece of legislation should default to a standing committee. The second amendment was approved with Volan, Piedmont-Smith, and Flaherty voting against. Council members unanimously approved the ordinance as amended.

Monroe County Commissioners

Community Corrections Director Becca Streit presented the 2020 Community Correction Grant Annual Report to the Monroe County Commissioners on February 17th. Streit stated the department received grant funds for the 37th year in a row.

Streit said Community Corrections received about 1 point 3 million dollars throughout 2020. She mentioned staff members continued to work throughout the pandemic.

Streit mentioned Monroe County Pre-trial Program was certified by Indiana Office of Court Services, and over 15 hundred pre-trial assessments were conducted in 2020. Commissioner Lee Jones expressed her excitement for the pre-trial certification.

Streit spoke about the continued operation of Problem-Solving Courts throughout 2020. She reported the drug treatment court saw its twenty first year of operation, and the mental health court saw its sixth year of operation. Commissioner Penny Githens said problem solving courts allow families to stay together.

Commissioners unanimously accepted the annual presentation from the Community Corrections.
