Civic Conversations: Gender Equality with Susan Williams

Play

Welcome to the February edition of Civic Conversations – a podcast collaboration between the League of Women Voters of Bloomington-Monroe County and the WFHB Local News.

Today’s guest is Susan Williams, Walter W. Foskett Professor of Law at the IU Mauer School of Law and Director for Center for Constitutional Democracy. Our topic is gender equality.

“There are three parts to the equality between groups,” she said.

Williams says one part has to do with redistribution of resources – particularly material resources. She said the second aspect of equality has to do with respect. Thirdly, she said representation in decision-making positions are crucial to the idea of gender equality.

“One thing I think it’s important for your listeners to know, is that women, in fact, are disadvantaged in all three of these dimensions,” said Williams.

Professor Williams is the author of Truth, Autonomy, and Speech: Feminist Theory and the First Amendment (NYU Press 2004). She is also the editor of two books on constitutional design: Constitutionalism and Social Difference in Pan Asia and Constituting Equality: Gender Equality and Comparative Constitutional Law (Cambridge University Press, 2009). She has written numerous articles and book chapters on constitutional law, constitutional design, and feminist theory. (Photo courtesy of Indiana University).

Host Jim Allison poses the question of how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted women – in particular long-term women’s progress.

“The big, worrisome effect has been, in fact, the women who have left the labor market because of the pandemic,” said Williams. “We really need to make sure that this does not lead to a long-term loss in employment status for women.”
