Play

This is the WFHB Local News for Tuesday, August 15th, 2023.

In today’s feature report, WFHB Correspondent Brookelyn Lambright spoke with local advocate Sam Mitchell about his podcast, Autism Rocks and Rolls, which raises awareness and works to end the stigma around autism. Lambright has more in the bottom half of tonight’s program.

Also coming up in the next half hour, Lil Bub’s Lil Show – a co-production between the WFHB Local News and Lil Bub’s Big Fund.

But first, your local headlines:

Bloomington City Council

During its meeting on August 9th, the Bloomington City Council heard Ordinance 23-15 which would expand the boundaries of Bloomington Transit further into Monroe County and the town of Ellettsville. Council Member Steve Volan who sponsored the bill outlined an overview of the ordinance during Wednesday night’s meeting.

Volan characterized the ordinance as, “the most significant change to Bloomington Transit in 50 years.” The ordinance would establish a Department of Transportation and create the Bloomington Public Transit Corporation. Volan said the change would only affect BT’s operating boundaries, not its taxing ones.

General Manager of Bloomington Transit John Connell spoke in support of the BT expansion. Connell said he wanted to see an extension of services beyond city limits.

Councilor Ron Smith expressed concern that Area 10 Agency on Aging would be impacted by the ordinance due to a change in the 2020 Census that redefined what is considered an urbanized area. Connell addressed Smith’s concerns.

Smith asked for clarification on how the boundaries would be extended into the county. Connell elaborated on Bloomington Transportation’s plans.

Local journalist Dave Askins of the B-Square Bulletin shared concerns he had during the public comment portion of the meeting. He pointed out what he saw as “factual issues” in the proposed legislation.

The council unanimously approved the ordinance. The legislation awaits approval from Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton before going into effect. The Bloomington City Council will meet again for its regular session at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers on August 16th.
