Students Overstaying Visa May Be Barred From U.S.

International students who overstay their visa may be barred from entering the United States.

The change in U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services policy was posted earlier this month, and will go into effect on August 9.
The change in policy for F, J, and M visa holders, as well as their spouses and children, follows an executive order from President Trump, calling for tougher immigration policy within the U.S. The order was issued on January 25, 2017.

This new policy could affect over 8,500 international students at Indiana University and over 9,000 students at Purdue University. Students may be barred from reentering the US, if they overstay their visa by 180 days.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services department is currently accepting public comments on the new policy, at the email address [email protected].
