Move to Amend

This morning “Move to Amend” – a new local citizen action group- announced the launch of a petition drive seeking a change in the United States constitution. The Bloomington branch of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom held a meeting on January 19th to organize Indiana residents to gather signatures for a petition that looks to overturn the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court Decision.

The Citizens United decision meant that the government could not limit spending by corporations or unions on issues or candidates due to their first amendment right to free speech. The WILPF’s petition seeks an amendment to the United States Constitution that would overturn the Citizens United decision and ban corporate and union participation in the voting process. WFHB News Director Alycin Bektesh spoke this afternoon with Bloomington’s first female Mayor Tommy Allison who is a member of WILPF about Move-to-Amends’ goals for the petition drive. Allison begins with summery of the rise of “corporate personhood” for this WFHB feature exclusive.
