Interchange – Zaineb Istrabadi: Politics in the Middle East

Host Dave Stewart welcomes Professor Zaineb Istrabadi. Dr. Istrabadi teaches Arabic at Indiana University and is a highly sought-after speaker. Ms. Istrabadi worked for many years as a personal assistant/editor for Dr. Edward Said, the author of the groundbreaking book “Orientalism”. Hear a lively discussion of vital current topics that affect the Middle East and our world. In the first segment, the greeting and response of “Assalamu Alaykum” is discussed, which leads to a discussion of the importantance of reference to original sources of world-religions and the inter-faith outreach that Dr. Zaineb is involved in here in Bloomington and the Midwest. In the second segment, the discussion focuses on Dr. Zaineb’s years of work with Dr. Edward Said and begin a discussion of the legacy of Edward Said’s contributions to literature and criticism, music, and political commentary. We begin to talk about the ground-breaking book and concept of Orientalism. In the third segment, this discussion continues and Susan Gubar’s book The Madwomen in the Attic is brought forward as an example of how all representative voices are now beginning to be heard, and why it is important that this is occuring.
