Hoosier Character: Christine Friesel

Play

She’s been helping people trace their Hoosier roots as the maven of the Monroe County Public Library’s Indiana Room for years. Now, Friesel is spearheading the MCPL’s effort in getting the Hoosier Character digital map of the state in the 19th century off the ground. The map depends on oral histories and traditional sources to mark where “the common and the bold” lived in the state. The MCPL works with Monroe County GIS and the Monroe County History Center to make the interactive map available to all Indiana residents and organizations. Hoosier Character has been launched as part of the state’s celebration of America 250, the 2026 anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
