Gladys DeVane received Bloomington’s Lifetime Contribution Award on Tuesday, one of three local women honored. The theme of this year’s event was “Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment.” DeVane is a former IU professor who, after retiring in 2003, became active in local community theater and storytelling projects. She presented a one woman show at the Bloomington Playwright Project, called “From the Mouth of my People: A Journey through Slavery.” In her acceptance speech DeVane tells us about Big Momma, growing up in a segregated world, and the events that made her the person she is – for this WFHB feature report.
