Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb directed flags to be flown at half-mast yesterday afternoon. The governor’s announcement comes after the death of Senator John McCain, who died on Saturday.

Holcomb’s directive will stay in place until McCain’s funeral proceedings this Sunday, September 2, 2018. The Governor is asking businesses and residents in the state to lower their flags as well.

McCain launched two unsuccessful presidential bids, in 2000 and 2008. The Arizona Senator was also a decorated Vietnam veteran, who spent five and a half years imprisoned in North Vietnam.

The Republican Senator previously served two terms as an Arizona Congressman. He was a member of the Senate Arms Services Committee. He began stepping back from his role in the Senate last year, following a brain cancer diagnosis.

McCain’s Senate seat will remain vacant until after the funeral proceedings this weekend. His replacement will be nominated by Arizona Governor, Doug Ducey.
