Flags are at half-mast throughout the state of Indiana.

Governor Eric Holcomb directed flags to be lowered on Thursday evening, after the death was announced of former U.S. Senator Birch Bayh.

The former Democratic Senator Bayh served as Indiana’s Federal Senator from 1963 until 1981. During his tenure in the US Senate Birch Bayh authored key Women’s Rights legislation, including his sponsorship of the Equal Rights Amendment. Bayh also was the author of Title 9 legislation, which is perhaps best known for expanding opportunities for female college athletes.

Birch Bayh’s son, Evan Bayh became the 46th Governor of Indiana, from 1989 until 1997.

Evan Bayh later became an United States Senator for Indiana, and served in office from 1999 until 2011. Governor Holcomb has stated flags will remain at half mast until Birch Bayh is laid to rest.
