Civic Conversations – The Supreme Court

Play

Welcome to the latest installment of Civic Conversations, a podcast brought to you in collaboration with the League of Women Voters Bloomington-Monroe County and WFHB.

In today’s program, host Jim Allison speaks with Sheila Kennedy, Professor at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI and former executive director of the Indiana chapter of ACLU.

Professor Kennedy discusses the U.S. Supreme Court – particularly a Texas lawsuit challenging election results in key states, which was tossed out by the highest court in the United States.

The conversation covers a variety of issues within the Supreme Court, including Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s interpretation of originalism. Also, our guest ponders what James Madison would think about the late Judge Antonin Scalia’s textualist approach to the Constitution.

Kennedy calls for greater civics education in schools. She says, “we need to prepare students to live in a multicultural, democratic society.” Other topics include voter suppression, religious freedom and marriage equality.
