City Council Continues Debate on Fourth Street Garage

Play

The Bloomington City Council did not take a vote over proposed parking garage plans last night.

City Council members were ready to kill a plan for the Fourth Street parking garage, in downtown Bloomington, since the city administration signaled they were not ready to commit to a 70 foot height restriction on a replacement garage. The current Fourth Street parking garage is 45 feet tall.

The city administration wants to move forward with knocking down the 30 year old garage and replacing it with a taller parking building with more spaces, but opponents have balked at the $29 million price tag.

The proposal also includes building another parking garage in the city’s planned Trades District.

Bloomington City council debated the parking garage proposal for four and half hours during their meeting last night. Another proposal would allocate millions of dollars towards repairing the Fourth Street garage.
