BloomingOUT – Sara Gardner – June 14th, 2018

Play

We are excited to introduce our featured guest Sara Gardner (aka Smoove, aka Destiny Esther). Sara has been a gay for over 47 years. She went to Indiana University and rode in Little 500 from 1991-1993, winning in 92 and 93 while riding for a team called the “Land Sharks” lovingly referred to as the “Land Dykes” by the frat bros (even though she was the only dyke on the team). In 1993 she moved to Chicago after graduating with a BA in Mathematics and Environmental Science from Indiana University. While living in Chicago, Sara attended her first Pride festival and still managed to work for AC Nielsen as a research statistician working on pricing and promotional strategies on brands ranging from Captain Crunch to OB Tampons. She left this thrilling line of work in 1996 to go to grad school to study Geography at the University of Arizona in Tucson. It was here where she became painfully aware that her love of intramural sports was not enough to keep her there to get a PhD, so she moved back to Chicago to be a suit for a Mutual Fund company.

In the winter of 1999, she moved to San Francisco where she would end her career as a corporate whore. She quickly learned how to ride a motorcycle and participated in Dykes on Bikes every year until she left in 2005. After San Francisco, she moved back to Bloomington and worked for The Kinsey Institute, Sociology, Math Stat Center and UITS before opening Bloomington’s only queer bar and unicorn sanctuary, The Back Door, in 2013.

Featured music for this episode comes from Yo La Tengo’s 2018 album There’s a Riot Going On.
