The Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women is accepting nominations for the 2019 Woman of the Year.

The award will be presented in March, in honor of Women’s History Month. Sue Owens, staff liaison for the commission, said that the 2019 Woman of the Year should be someone with significant contributions to the community in their chosen area.

Nominations should include the name, address, telephone number and email address of the nominee as well as a description of how the nominee’s accomplishments have improved the lives of local women or girls. Nominees must be a resident of Bloomington or Monroe County. Nominations can be completed online on the City of Bloomington’s website: Bloomington.in.gov.

The commission is also accepting nominations for two other awards recognizing the contributions of women in the community.

The Emerging Leader Award honors women in the early stages of their work making an impact in the lives of local girls and women. One previous recipient was Sheri Benham, a foster parent turned social worker who founded Stepping Stones, a service offering transitional housing to homeless youth.

The Toby Strout Lifetime Achievement Award, named for the longtime executive director of Middle Way House, honors a woman who has devoted a large portion of her life to helping women in the community. One previous recipient was LaVerta Terry, who died in 2016 at age 89 and was the first black teacher hired by what is now the Monroe County Community School Corporation.

The deadline for nominations is January 18.
