The IU Libraries Open Tape Clinic hosted by Audio-Video Preservation Services (AVPS) provides an opportunity to learn about archival audio and video tape formats.
This event, which is conducted by the tape experts at AVPS, will feature the following:
- hands-on experience in handling, repairing, cleaning, baking, and other physical restoration tasks needed to prepare tapes for digitization
- hands-on diagnosis of preservation problems or potential issues with your tapes
- hands-on diagnosis of format characteristics that impact the accuracy and quality of playback including track configuration, playback speed, video tracking, play direction, and others discussions on how the technology works for both audio and video formats. How is the signal captured on tape? How is the signal retrieved?
- advice and recommendations for digitizing and preserving your audio and video tapes
Bring:
Tapes that you want to have inspected or wish to learn more about.
Tapes that you have no idea what (if anything) is recorded on them.
Questions about the various audio and video tape formats that you want answered.
