Green Peeps Book Club: The Bear (Age 18 and up)

Join this book club to discuss nature-focused reads each month. You’ll also learn how to become more ecologically-minded through activities or speakers designed to enhance our reading. This month, we’ll be joined by Kevin Glenn, the Director and Lead Instructor at the Wild Nature Project, a Midwest source for nature education, wildlife tracking, medicinal plants, wilderness survival skills, and programs for youth, teens, and adults in Bloomington. This month’s book is The Bear by Andrew Krivak.

The last two humans alive are an unnamed father and daughter who live off the land in the remote wilderness after the end of civilization. As the child gets older, her father teaches her how to live in the wild surroundings to prepare for an adulthood in harmony with nature. When he passes away, the girl must find her own way through the world with the help of the animals and landscapes around her—if she can learn to listen closely enough. This is a gentle, loving, and post-apocalyptic story that highlights nature’s endurance, love, and human fragility.
