Re-enactors will create a “Heritage Village” in Lakeview picnic area, next to the swimming beach. The village will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 7; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 8; and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday, July 9.
Naturalist staff also will offer history programs throughout the weekend.
Attendees can learn a basic basket weaving technique, make a quill pen, complete a leather crafting project, turn plant material into cordage, and learn about the importance of furs to early settlers.

The Village Art Walk is a self guiding tour of fifteen downtown galleries featuring original, local and regional fine arts and crafts. Nine of the fifteen participating galleries are open late – until 8 p.m. Enjoy art demonstrations, music and refreshments at many of the participating galleries. Meet the artists and see them at work! The Village Art Walk is always on the second Saturday of the month from May – November.
Sparkles, shimmies, earthy, and elegance briefly describe the complex and wonderful world of belly dance. Spectacular Shimmies is the performance series of Shimmy Con, an annual Belly Dance Conference. Enjoy one or both nights of amazing performances and experience everything that shimmies.
Friday evening will start with Shimmy Con’s keynote address by Ruby Jazayre. The talk will reflect on the changes in the Middle Eastern Dance World since she began her dance career in 1978. After the talk, dance artists from Canada and the United States will grace the stage to showcase a variety of Belly Dance styles.
Shimmy Con is a recipient of the Arts Start Up support from the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.On Saturday, listeners will enjoy live music by Salaam, the Middle Eastern music ensemble of Dena El Saffar and Tim Moore, and performances by world-renowned dance artists, which consist of the amazing instructors and speakers of the conference. After the performance, join us in open dancing with Salaam.
Shimmy Con will be the first belly dance event of its kind in Indiana. Consisting of 30 workshops, 8 lectures, 2 panel discussions, 2 performances, and a keynote address, Shimmy Con will give dancers in the Midwest a place to come together and share a wonderful art form in a supportive, fun, and professional atmosphere. You will have the opportunity to learn, share, grow, be inspired, evolve, meet new people, and create new friends. The journey of the belly dancer is wide and complex. Jazz in July free concert series presents Stardusters Combo, playing outside of Royal South Toyota on South Walnut Street. Free and open to the public.
For the second straight year, The Venue challenged artists to submit their very best work, in all media, capturing the true art and soul of Bloomington. The result is a display of 30 pieces of art that truly capture the best spirit of our community.
Bloomington’s only ukulele band! Three women of a certain age who all wear glasses and perform their ukulele magic with tongue firmly planted in cheek while bringing you tunes from across the decades.
Brenner will perform music and invite the young — and young at heart — to join him in exploring the jazzy side of blues, boogie woogie and other piano styles during this hour-long concert. He will focus on Indiana composers and musicians, and invite attendees to play along on some times using percussion instruments (provided).
The concert will take place at the Paynetown Activity Center Amphitheater, which is next to the swimming beach. Some bench seating is available. Visitors may want to bring lawn chairs.

The Animal Control Commission is a citizen’s commission charged with:
- Formulating, adopting and implementing policies, principles, and standards for humane treatment and control of all animals in the city.
- Reviewing the decisions and actions of the senior animal control officer in any matter related to the enforcement of chapter 2.12.010 of the Bloomington Municipal Code.
- Making recommendations to the mayor of the city as to necessary ordinances concerning the care, treatment and control of animals.
