Ryder Film Series: ‘Before Stonewall’ @ IU Fine Arts Upstairs, 1201 East 7th Street, on the north side of Showalter Fountain, next to the IU Auditorium
Jun 7 @ 6:15 pm

In 1969 the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village, leading to three nights of rioting by the city’s gay community. With this outpouring of courage and unity the gay liberation movement had begun.

Before Stonewall pries open the closet door, setting free the dramatic story of the sometimes horrifying public and private existences experienced by LGBT Americans since the early 1900’s. Revealing and often humorous, this widely acclaimed film relives the emotionally-charged sparking of today’s gay rights movement, from the events that led to the fevered 1969 riots to many other milestones in the brave fight for acceptance.

Narrated by iconic author Rita Mae Brown. Groundbreaking interviews with Ann Bannon, Martin Duberman, Allen Ginsberg, Barbara Gittings, Harry Hay, Mabel Hampton, Dr. Evelyn Hooker, Frank Kameny, Audre Lorde, and Richard Bruce Nugent (87 min)

Cari Ray’s ‘For a Song’ Series featuring: RALPH ED JEFFERS, NICK NACE, CHUCK WILLS (guest host) @ Country Heritage Winery, 225 S Van Buren St # 3, Nashville
Jun 7 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

A NOTE FROM CARI ABOUT THE “FOR A SONG” SERIES:
As I’ve been out touring the region and the country, one of the most amazing things has been the willingness of fellow songwriters to help a new girl in a new town…from sharing connections and putting in a good word, to sharing their stages and fans. So it was on my mind for some time to create an opportunity close to home where I might be able return the favor.

I had been working with Chateau Thomas Winery (Now Country Heritage Winery) in Nashville, IN for a few years to cultivate a singular, listening room atmosphere in a tourist town full of bar gigs. And we were able to do so with surprising success. So when I thought about who I’d like to partner with to bring this idea to life, the listening room and the audience we had built there seemed the perfect choice. And the support of the winery means the only costs to the audience are time, attention, and the generosity they choose to express through the tip jar.

I hosted the first “For a Song” Series of writers in the round at the Nashville Tasting Room April 28, 2017. Two accomplished songwriters and I sat in front of a packed house of listeners and spent the evening sharing our songs and the stories behind them. No two FAS evenings are alike as each new pair of writers joining me brings a different flavor, but the evenings have felt consistently warm, fun and connected. My goal is to continue offering fellow songwriters an opportunity to sit in front of an appreciative, listening crowd and to offer that audience a high-quality performance of original music by the artists who created it.

Folks can expect a laid-back evening…an opportunity to slow down, focus, and reconnect.

Crystal Swan, IU Cinema, 1213 E 7th St, Bloomington, IN
Jun 7 @ 7:00 pm – 8:45 pm

Set a few years after Belarus gained independence in 1990, this vibrant debut feature by writer/director Darya Zhuk follows the path of young Evelina, who dreams of moving to Chicago where she could pursue her passion for house music. However, obtaining a U.S. visa proves a difficult endeavor and, determined to flee the country, the young woman takes the risk of buying a letter of employment from the black market. Depicting a nation anticipating a brighter future, Crystal Swan is a story about a woman and her country, where feelings of self and belonging are yet to be defined. The film was selected as the Belarusian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards—Belarus’s first Oscar submission in 22 years. The Crystal Swan soundtrack features tracks from a handful of Chicago club legends, including Marshall Jefferson and Derrick Carter. In Russian with English subtitles. Contains mature content, including sexual violence and drug references.

Ryder Film Series: ‘Non-Fiction’ @ IU Global and International Studies Theater, 355 N Jordan Ave,
Jun 7 @ 7:00 pm

Juliette Binoche and Guillame Canet reunite with acclaimed director Olivier Assayas (Personal ShopperSummer Hours) for this wry, seductive tale of sex, lies, and literature. Set amidst the bohemian intelligentsia of the Parisian publishing world, Non-Fiction traces the romantic and emotional fallout that results when a controversial writer blurs the line between fact and fiction, using his real-life love affairs—including a passionate fling with an actress (Binoche) who happens to be married to his editor (Canet)—as fodder for his explosive new novel. Balancing dry wit with keen observations on the tensions between art, commerce, and technology, Non-Fiction is a buoyant, breezy delight from a master director at his most effortlessly brilliant.

Switchyard Run/Walk Club, Switchyard Brewing, 419 N. Walnut St., Bloomington, IN
Jun 10 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Choose a 1.5, 3 or 5-mile family-friendly course to run or walk and earn points towards run club milestone rewards!

We formed our run club as part of our brewery’s dedication to our community. Our sixth Guiding Principle of how we run Switchyard states, “Be an active part of our community.” We believe that business can, and should be a catalyst for positive change within our community. We believe that a business has an obligation to give back to the community of which it is a part. Our run club is an extension of exactly that.

Our routes can be found on our Run Club Facebook page, or you can pick up a printout of our turn by turn directions for simple navigation at check-in.

As always, be courteous to our neighbors while running by making sure to look both ways before darting into traffic, running off to the side and letting cars pass, and be sure to give our neighbors a wave as you run by! 👋🏼

We all run the first mile together.

Be sure to arrive at the brewery a little early each run to sign in.

Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope, Brown County High School Auditorium, 235 Schoolhouse Rd, Nashville, IN
Jun 10 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

RESILIENCE is a one-hour  documentary that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new movement to treat and prevent Toxic Stress. Now understood to be one of the leading causes of everything from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression, extremely stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health, learning, and behavior. However, as experts and practitioners profiled in RESILIENCE are proving, what’s predictable is preventable. These physicians, educators, social workers and communities are daring to talk about the effects of divorce, abuse and neglect. And they’re using cutting edge science to help the next generation break the cycles of adversity and disease.

A facilitated panel discussion with Q&A will follow the hour-long film. The panel will include key stakeholders from our community who work with our children and youth across systems. Your participation is important to harnessing efforts and sparking community action.

Sponsored by the Brown County Schools, and many others.

Disability Inclusivity in the Workplace
On Thursday, June 13th, hear from a panel of advocates how we can all consider not only our work environment, but other spaces, through a more inclusive lens. The panel will include Brandi Hamilton, Director of Community Services for LifeDesigns; Randy Paul, a longtime local community organizer and activist; and Angie Vandersteen, Business Development Manager with Indianapolis-based disability partner, Tangram Business Resourcing.
“One of the greatest barriers to employment for people with disabilities is fear of the unknown on the part of employers. Common fears include:
  • Fear of how other employees and customers will be accepting to people with disabilities
  • Fear of how to supervise someone with a disability
  • Fear of safety concerns in the workplace
  • Fear of communicating with someone with a disability
  • Fear of what happens if it doesn’t work out
These fears are real, especially for those that have no or very little interaction with disabilities. People with disabilities want to be treated like anyone else and they want a career not just a job. People with disabilities are still stigmatized with low expectations, and have a 2x higher unemployment rate compared to their peers without a disability. By addressing fears and stigmas, we begin to see the person and not their disability.”
