LAHSOW-Bloomington Opera Workshop returns for a 6th summer to offer Mozart’s timeless, witty masterpiece presented in concert version in its entirety, sung in Italian with English subtitles projected. The casts are a fine blend of young professionals visiting from Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Texas and California.
Performances will take place May 30th, May 31st and June 1st at 7:00 PM with rotating casts.

Since her last trip to Bloomington, Kate’s Netflix special as part of The Comedy Lineup series drew rave reviews upon its release this past October. The second son of Bob and Rita Marley, eight-time Grammy-winning musician and producer Stephen began his career as a precocious six-year old singing, dancing and playing percussion with his siblings in the group The Melody Makers. As a teenager he assisted in the production of The Melody Makers’ albums including three that would win the Grammy for Best Reggae Album.
In 1993, Stephen co-founded Ghetto Youths International with older brother Ziggy as a means of controlling their own music and helping upcoming artists. Stephen’s earliest solo production efforts include his late grandmother’s album My Altar, followed in 1995 by Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers single “Works To Do” and younger brother Damian’s “10,000 Chariots.” In 1996, Damian released his debut album, Mr. Marley, on the Ghetto Youths imprint. Stephen played several instruments and wrote most of the songs, in addition to producing the album.
The first project that brought Stephen’s production capabilities widespread attention was Chant Down Babylon, where he audaciously manipulated his father’s original vocal outtakes from the 1970s Island Records’ sessions, splicing them into duets with hip-hop and R&B artists, while updating the Wailers’ richly textured one-drop rhythms with an assortment of samples, loops and overdubs. Chant Down Babylon achieved its objective of bringing Bob’s music to a new generation of fans, earned a Grammy nomination, was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, and has sold more than one million copies worldwide.
Stephen’s first solo effort, Mind Control, won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2007. In 2008, Marley released an acoustic version of the hit album, which gained the artist another Grammy. In 2011, Stephen released his third solo album, The Revelation, Pt.1: The Root of Life, which reconfirmed Stephen’s expansive capabilities as an affecting vocalist, a versatile lyricist, and an accomplished instrumentalist, while furthering his renown as an ingenious producer.
Stephen continued to showcase his talent for navigating between genres by effortlessly blending reggae with soul, hip hop and electronic beats on his fourth solo album, Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life, released in 2016. A robust reflection of his work, the album features songs with notable artists including Rakim, Dead Prez, Wyclef Jean, Black Thought, Shaggy, Pitbull, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, and more.
His appearance at the BCT is part of the Acoustic Jams Tour and his daughter, Mystic Marley, will open the show. Doors will open for this GENERAL ADMISSION performance at 7:30pm. There will not be seats in the orchestra pit.
Our two breakfasts are always the first Wednesday and the third Friday of the month at 10am. We meet at the Cloverleaf South Restaurant on Winslow at Henderson, behind the IU Credit Union in a shopping center that also has Avers Pizza and a hardware store. Anywhere from 12-25 of us sit at one long table; they just add more chairs and tables as our group grows.
Bloomington Parks and Recreation and the Bloomington Fire Department present Fitness with a Firefighter—a weekly workout. All fitness levels are welcome. Workouts vary, and usually combine cardiovascular and strength training exercises. Modifications are available if needed. Workouts are approximately 30-45 minutes. Registration is not required. Set a few years after Belarus gained independence in 1990, this vibrant debut feature by writer/director Darya Zhuk follows the path of young Evelina, who dreams of moving to Chicago where she could pursue her passion for house music. However, obtaining a U.S. visa proves a difficult endeavor and, determined to flee the country, the young woman takes the risk of buying a letter of employment from the black market. Depicting a nation anticipating a brighter future, Crystal Swan is a story about a woman and her country, where feelings of self and belonging are yet to be defined. The film was selected as the Belarusian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards—Belarus’s first Oscar submission in 22 years. The Crystal Swan soundtrack features tracks from a handful of Chicago club legends, including Marshall Jefferson and Derrick Carter. In Russian with English subtitles. Contains mature content, including sexual violence and drug references.
The Brother Brothers carry the folk tradition for a new generation. Identical twins David and Adam Moss honor contemporary aches with the nostalgic tenderness of another time on their debut full-length album, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW, out October 19, 2018 on Compass Records. Their stunning songcraft blends masterfully gentle guitar, cello and five-string fiddle with the sublime sort of two-part harmonies only brothers can carry. Their palpably fraternal stage presence and wonderfully familiar heart have earned repute among a modern folk scene; The Brother Brothers have recently opened for Big Thief, Lake Street Dive, Shakey Graves and more.
The album’s title, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW, refers to the personal nature of these songs. As David explains, “I think every song on the album is about a person or a character, and in a way, it’s a reflection of ourselves.” For example, “Mary Ann,” written by David, is an encouraging ode to a friend with depression. “Banjo Song,” written by Adam, conveys a conversation with someone who gives up playing an instrument after a hurtful breakup. Though he’s usually on fiddle, Adam plays banjo on the track; throughout the album, David plays guitar and cello.
Recorded at Mark Ettinger’s Lethe Lounge in New York City with producer Robin Macmillan and engineer Jefferson Hamer, The Brother Brothers capably capture a modern snapshot of their surroundings. Yet, SOME PEOPLE I KNOW retains a timeless feel – something that the brothers were aiming for.
“I just want people to listen to it once and want to listen to it again,” David says of the album. “And every time they listen to it, I want them to find something new and in some way relate it to themselves. Whether they’re listening to it today or in 40 years, I hope it will make them feel just the same.”

All are invited to celebrate the beginning of Bloomington summer with a First Friday block party. West Fourth Street will be closed for a block on either side of Rogers Street with plentiful art, food, music, and activities for all ages.
The event is organized with the participation of a large group of neighborhood partners, including: FAR Center for Contemporary Arts & Pictura Gallery, I Fell, Rainbow Bakery, Secretly Group, WFHB, rock paper scissors, Lotus, Ardent Instruments, Cicada Cinema, The Bike Shop, Satori Martial Arts, Power Plant Gallery, Persimmon Inn, Oona, Siosi Design, Goat Conspiracy Farm, The Venue Fine Arts, Artisan Alley, Gather, Pili’s Party Taco, Rasta Pops, and more.
Vegan barbeque from Rainbow Bakery, Mexican food from Pili’s Party Taco, frozen treats from Rasta Pops, and gluten-free ice cream sandwiches from Oona will all be on offer for dinner or after-dinner enjoyment. Sets by Busman’s Holiday, DJs from Secretly Group, and a local jazz combo will be happening throughout the evening.
For families, Lotus will offer art-making activities, goats from Goat Conspirary Farm will make an appearance, and plenty of sidewalk chalk will be available for impromptu creation. Satori Martial Arts will provide live martial arts demos for adults and kids.
Indoors, visitors can view exciting new work by several artists as part of Gallery Walk. Pictura Gallery is exhibiting photography work by Leigh Merrill (“This Place”), with a pop-up exhibit of woodworking and photography by Siosi Design in their theater space. Rainbow Bakery is opening a show of work by Bloomington multimedia artist Mitch Rainey. I Fell will be opening an exhibition of new art, TBA, and Power Plant Gallery (in the basement of I Fell) will have cool stuff going on. Cicada Cinema will be screening the best of the Instant Gratification Movie Challenge continuously inside Ardent Instruments, with a 10-year-anniversary celebration of the beloved community filmmaking event in the I Fell after the block party has died down.
Down the block near Third and Rogers, the offices of Secretly Group will also have open doors, with a staff art show in their breezeway.
On Friday, June 7th, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The Venue will welcome back to the Bloomington art community, Linda Lorton Spier. A former mainstay of Blooomington’s Gallery North, Linda moved her primary Gallery outlet to Nashville, Indiana, and then on to her present studio in Carmel, Indiana. With this show at The Venue Fine Art & Gifts, Linda’s artistic journey has come full circle.
As is our custom for Gallery Walk, we will serve gourmet soup and other taste treats. Our regular collection will also be on display for viewing and purchase.

“The Artwork of Mark Riggins: A Pen and Ink Tribute to Bloomington and Southern Indiana”
Mark is a lifelong resident of Bloomington and has been interested in creating artwork in various media all his life, but began work in pen and ink in 1980. Most of the subjects of his drawings are of structures and scenes in Bloomington and southern Indiana. The objective of his work is to provide artistic vision to subjects that have fond memories for his clients. In some cases he creates one of a kind commissioned works, but often they are subjects used to provide limited edition prints that many can own and enjoy.

As I’ve been out touring the region and the country, one of the most amazing things has been the willingness of fellow songwriters to help a new girl in a new town…from sharing connections and putting in a good word, to sharing their stages and fans. So it was on my mind for some time to create an opportunity close to home where I might be able return the favor.
I had been working with Chateau Thomas Winery (Now Country Heritage Winery) in Nashville, IN for a few years to cultivate a singular, listening room atmosphere in a tourist town full of bar gigs. And we were able to do so with surprising success. So when I thought about who I’d like to partner with to bring this idea to life, the listening room and the audience we had built there seemed the perfect choice. And the support of the winery means the only costs to the audience are time, attention, and the generosity they choose to express through the tip jar.
I hosted the first “For a Song” Series of writers in the round at the Nashville Tasting Room April 28, 2017. Two accomplished songwriters and I sat in front of a packed house of listeners and spent the evening sharing our songs and the stories behind them. No two FAS evenings are alike as each new pair of writers joining me brings a different flavor, but the evenings have felt consistently warm, fun and connected. My goal is to continue offering fellow songwriters an opportunity to sit in front of an appreciative, listening crowd and to offer that audience a high-quality performance of original music by the artists who created it.

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi blurs the line between fiction and non-fiction, sometimes playing himself in his films. In 3 Faces he plays a dissident filmmaker. In real life, Panahi was arrested in Iran in 2009 and again in 2010. Accused of making anti-regime propaganda, he was forbidden to leave and barred from making movies for 20 years; this is the fourth feature he’s made since. They have won awards at festivals which he has not been allowed to attend. (Some of you have seen his earlier films, Taxi and The White Balloon as part of our series.)

Rain or shine. Visit five creative private gardens and the spectacular Flower Show, held at the Monroe County History Center featuring floral displays created by Bloomington Garden Club members. Visitors are invited to stroll the gardens and the Flower Show at their leisure in any order on both days. Cameras are welcome.
The Flower Show at the Monroe County History Center is part of the annual Summer Garden Walk, and your Garden Walk ticket provides entry. This year’s cheerful theme, Everything’s Coming Up Roses, signals the kinds of vases and flowers you will see. Bloomington Garden Club members arrange dozens of full size and miniature flower displays using locally grown and imported roses, other flowers, and greenery.
Tickets for the Garden Walk are available at various local businesses in town. Proceeds benefit Bloomington community gardens such as children’s garden programs, civic planting and beautification projects. The event is a substance abuse prevention event that encourages overall healthy living. This year’s event will include long time favorites such as, airbrush face painting, t-shirt tie-dying, inflatable games and obstacle courses, fireworks, hot dogs and chips, ice cream, snow cones, popcorn, and much, much more. As always, admission, food, treats, and all activities are completely free! This year we are adding a teen area. This area will have life size Jenga, teen inflatables, and corn-hole games. We will have door prizes such a Big Splash Tickets, Indianapolis Zoo Tickets, and State Park passes, just to name a few.

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi blurs the line between fiction and non-fiction, sometimes playing himself in his films. In 3 Faces he plays a dissident filmmaker. In real life, Panahi was arrested in Iran in 2009 and again in 2010. Accused of making anti-regime propaganda, he was forbidden to leave and barred from making movies for 20 years; this is the fourth feature he’s made since. They have won awards at festivals which he has not been allowed to attend. (Some of you have seen his earlier films, Taxi and The White Balloon as part of our series.)
