FEATURING Andrew Hubbard (poetry), Tom Bitters (fiction), and Antonia Matthew (poetry)-WITH music by Kyle Quass
There will also be an open mic.
In the course of growing up and then trying to keep food on the table, Andy Hubbard has lived in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Washington DC, Maryland, North Carolina, Nebraska, Indiana, and Texas. He glories in his family, his home in the woods of Nashville, Indiana, his wife’s incomparable cooking, and his genius for procrastination. He is currently unemployed full-time as a poet. He frequently considers giving it up to become a productive member of society, but never gets around to it.
Tom Bitters has written fiction since fifth grade when he produced a short note, supposedly from his mother, explaining why he should be allowed to watch the seventh game of the World Series that afternoon. Since then, he has published stories in journals such as The Berkshire Review, Hampshire Life, Peninsular, and “Meat” for Tea. He moved to Bloomington in 2013 from Moscow, where he taught English to Russian children who mostly wanted to know why all Americans own guns. He serves on the Board of the Friends of the Monroe County Public Library and volunteers in the VITAL program there, tutoring ESL learners. His plan is to live long enough to see the I.U. football team play in the Rose Bowl again.
Antonia Matthew grew up in England during World War II and has lived in Bloomington since 1968. Since 1984 she has been member of Five Women Poets, who have put out three chapbooks and a CD of their work. She has been published in various magazines, NIMROD, WIND, and INDIANA REVIEW among them. Her work is also included in the anthologies A LINEN WEAVE OF BLOOMINGTON POETS and CELEBRATING SEVENTY. She has written a play, HOMEFRONT, which is built around the letters that she received from her father when he was fighting in Burma in WWII. It has had one staged reading. She’s written a novel that she shows to no one, and is currently working with memoir and flash fiction.

For more than two decades Gene Deer has been injecting audiences with his blend of Blues/Rock nationally and internationally. Performing more than 250 shows annually, this modern day blues man possesses vocals that were born to sing nothing but his style of blues. Gene’s mojo infects audiences and leaves them feeling the rhythm of blues long after the music stops. His music persona is a blend of Robert Cray, Stevie Ray, Eric Clapton and Muddy Waters, and it isn’t hard to testify to that while watching and hearing him perform. It’s sometimes hard to tell where the separation is between man and guitar.

Mark Robinson Talks about His New Album — and Going Out on a Musical Limb: The Mark Robinson Band Live at The 5 Spot
Releases July 7, 2017 on Blind Chihuahua Records
This live album is what happened when a blues-rock band got to stretch out and play without limits. It’s what I dreamed of doing when I left Indiana and moved to Nashville, Tennessee — to play guitar in the epicenter of the best music in the world.
At its core, the Mark Robinson Band consists of Mark Robinson (me) on guitar and vocals, Daniel Seymour on bass, and Rick Schell on drums. We’ve been playing together for some time now, but recently we’ve been evolving in our live performances, playing deeper grooves, taking longer solos, mixing it up with tempo changes — taking chances, going out on a limb, and then bringing it back in.
We did a series of shows late last year at East Nashville’s fabled bar The 5 Spot. It didn’t occur to me that the performances could turn into my first live album. After the gig, though, we all knew that something special had happened at those shows. The band — along with some very talented guests — had gone where few bands get to go. And The 5 Spot had recorded it all.
Those recordings really captured the energy and synergy of what we do when we perform in front of an audience. So now, with a little help from my friends, is the CD, The Mark Robinson Band Live at The Five Spot.
Blues, jazz, rock, country, soul and even a bit of psychedelia end up in extended jams that dig deep into the songs, the instruments, the players — into the heart of the music.
We are not your standard blues band. We rock hard, we swing, we take off on musical excursions. It’s all about interaction, all of us improvising together.
I’m so proud of this album. I hope you enjoy it.
Thanks,
MARK
P.S. from Mark’s Publicist: DownBeat called Mark Robinson “a focused, expressive guitarist,” and Blues Revue wrote: “excellent … serpentine guitar.” His first two albums, Quit Your Job – Play Guitar and Have Axe – Will Groove, were named to multiple “Best Of” lists, and Mark himself was voted “Best Roots Guitarist” in The Alternate Root’s 2013 Readers’ Poll.
