Film Showing: “I am Not Your Negro” @ IU Cinema, 1213 E 7th St., Bloomington @ IU Cinema
Feb 9 @ 7:00 pm

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of his manuscript.

Now, in his incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for.

BPP presents “Row After Row” @ Ted Jones Playhouse, 107 W. 9th St., Bloomington @ Ted Jones Playhouse
Feb 9 @ 7:30 pm

BPP is proud to announce its third show of the 2016-17 Mainstage Season, Row After Rowby Jessica Dickey. Row After Row is part of BPP’s Off Broadway/On-Ninth series. The production is directed by David Anspaugh, director of the award-winning films Hoosiers and Rudy. Row After Row is Anspaugh’s second production at BPP. He directed 2014’s Woodward/Newman Drama Award winner Ugly Lies the Bone by Lindsay Ferrentino.

David Anspaugh is thrilled to be directing again at BPP. “Exploring and telling relevant stories has always been important to me as a director. I believe this script – although about Civil War re-enactment – mirrors some of the struggles we’re trying to navigate in our current political and cultural landscape. I think is it a very timely and significant story.”

In Row After Row, historical accuracy is paramount to Cal and Tom, two hardcore Civil War re-enactors, fresh off their latest Gettysburg battle. But their accuracy is compromised when they’re joined by a soldier with a less than authentic confederate uniform… and the wrong gender. Straddling 1863 and today, Row After Row is a dark comedy about choosing your cause and finding your courage.

David Sheehan, (Home, Thirty Day Mourning Period, You Remind Me of You) is the show’s Assistant Director. “What’s striking about Row After Row is how this little play about re-enacting  history manages to march completely in step with current events. Without stooping  to partisan bickering, Row manages to create a meaningful, dramatic but often civil, dialogue about political correctness and especially the role of women in our national trajectory that brings to mind the tavern conversations that helped to shape this country,” he says.

Row After Row stars Paul Daily (Rx), Michael Sheehan, and Emily Radke (The Bull, The Moon and the Coronet of Stars). The show features Scenic Design by David Wade (Thirty Day Mourning Period, Toast,Billy Witch), Lighting Design by Aaron Bowersox (Toast, The Bull, the Moon and the Coronet of Stars), and Costume Design by Scott B. Jones (The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers, Ugly Lies the Bone, She Kills Monsters).

With the Off-Broadway/On-Ninth series, BPP helps a successful new play move across the country. No need to purchase plane fare – we’ll bring the hits to you!

Bloomington Community Song Circle @ Bloomingfoods East, 3220 E. 3rd St., Bloomington @ Bloomingfoods East
Feb 10 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Come enjoy singing with us!

Singing together to nourish heart and soul – enchanting our world through songs of love, beauty, wonder, play, spirit and freedom

We welcome everyone and all voices, whether you are a professional musician or have no experience and think you can’t sing. We welcome all ages and people of all backgrounds. We are not rehearsing or performing. The singing and sharing songs together is our joy.

You are invited to share a song, but only if you wish. Remember, this is not a performance – you need not sing perfectly or have a “pretty” voice. All songs should have few words and be easy to learn (or worth the pleasant challenge), and some combination of positive/fun/beautiful. We share songs from different traditions that address universal themes as well as newer songs.

Questions? Write Christine Missik (organizer) at [email protected].
Also, more information can be found on meetup.com.
We come together for song circle usually 2 – 4 times a month, at different locations and times.

BPP presents “Row After Row” @ Ted Jones Playhouse, 107 W. 9th St., Bloomington @ Ted Jones Playhouse
Feb 11 @ 7:30 pm

One of the greatest tragedies of English renaissance drama comes to life in an updated version by the director who brought us last season’s brilliant reimagining of Jean Anouilh’s Antigone. The tragic heroine is a widow whose corrupt brothers intend to prevent her from remarrying. But her intentions are clear:

“If all my royal kindred/
Lay in my way unto this marriage,/
I’d make them my low foot-steps.”
