Arts fund to present Deaton, Captain Backfire
Brownstown Fund for the Arts will present an evening of music featuring Wayne Deaton and his band, Captain Backfire, at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at W. R. Ewing.
Tickets are $10 and are available at Family Drug and Ewing Unique and Boutique, both in Brownstown. Tickets also will be available at the door.
“Captain Backfire” consists of Deaton, lead singer and electric bass player; Chuck Bevers, electric guitar, and Gary Back, drums.
Deaton, who has been playing music since his high school days at Brownstown Central, said this particular band has been together since 2010.
As for the type of music they play, Deaton said, “We do a little bit of everything, including pop music from as far back as the 1940’s up to right now, mostly danceable. We try to have something for everyone.”
“We do some Hoagy Carmichael, even a Gershwin song,” he added, “but we’re a rock band — we have a lot of fun!”
Deaton said he is looking forward to the show at W. R. Ewing.
“It’s really fun playing in a smaller venue,” he explained. He said the band plays in locations at Indianapolis, sometimes with crowds of 300 or more, “but it’s just not as personal.”
Deaton’s musical background includes about 15 years working as a sound engineer, including shows with “everyone from Kid Rock to George Strait,” and he spent some time on the road doing sound for The Elms.
“I work with a lot of songwriters, and I have my own recording studio,” he added.
Those attending the June 11 show are encouraged to bring their own snacks and beverages.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Brownstown Fund for the Arts, which sponsors various music events, art exhibits, art classes for children and adults, and other related activities throughout the year.
The Monroe County Democrats’ Club will host their 5th Annual McCloskey Memorial Picnic on Sunday, June 12, from 1-5 at the Sycamore Shelter House at Cascades Park. The club will furnish barbecue, table service, and iced tea and lemonade. The public is invited to attend.
The Monroe County Democrats’ Club is an educational club that meets on the third Tuesday of each month (with occasional exceptions) from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The mission of the Indiana Limestone Symposium is to teach and share the art and tradition of carving limestone. Come out to the Symposium and watch beginning to advanced carvers!
The Symposium was founded in 1996 by two master stone sculptors, Amy Brier and Frank Young. It’s based on the Greek model of gathering for discussion and celebration, and continues the tradition of sculpture symposia that are common in Europe and Asia. The Symposium’s instructors believe that anyone with the desire to carve can learn how. The atmosphere is relaxed, congenial, and non-judgmental. Instructors are available at all times to guide participants through the process of carving from start to finish.

The Bloomfield Friday Farmer’s Market will feature “Small Business Night” and “Vintage Pop-Up Night” on Friday, September 9 from 4-7 pm. For a $5 fee, small businesses and vintage/collectable sellers are invited to set up a tent/table and advertise their business or sell their wares! The purpose of Small Business Night is to inform the public about the goods and services provided by small businesses in our own community, and to encourage residents to “buy local”. The Bloomfield market is held each Friday and is located on the corner of Spring and Franklin streets. Small Business displays will be set up in the grassy lot across Franklin Street from Bloomfield Manufacturing. Businesses can pay their fee to the market manager that evening. The Boys & Girls Club of Bloomington-Ellettsville Unit, in partnership with Ellettsville Main Street and Ellettsville Parks & Recreation Board will host the 2nd Annual Sweet Treet Social combined with the dedication of the Heritage Trail. It begins at 5:00 p.m. in the parking lot on the corner of SR 46 West and Sale Street. Activities will include the Celebrity Sing-Off, musical performance by Lilly Meister, Indiana Dance Cloggers, corn hole, bounce house, Mad 4 My Dog show, police and fire vehicles, and much more! The trail dedication will take place with a ribbon cutting at 6:00 p.m. on the east end of the Trail. Admission is FREE.
