Like You, I Have a Story to Tell – Documentary Film Screening @ Trinity Episcopal Church, 111 S. Grant St., Bloomington @ Trinity Episcopal Church
Jan 17 @ 5:00 pm

In 2016 a writing class at IU teamed up with the residents of Crawford Homes, a program that provides permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless people. Eleven residents teamed up with two students each to write their life stories. Not only did we learn about their diverse and fascinating backgrounds, but also about the ways that we are all the same, as people who grow, work, and love. Please join us to screen the documentary about the project and the effects it had on its participants.

Please bring a donation of a new, quality hygiene product or house cleaning product to help stock the pantry at Crawford Homes. Items from the pantry are used to reward residents for helping their neighbors or participating in activities.

Though Americans speak over 300 languages, music, the universal language, binds us together. On January 20 th , get to know your Latin American neighbors and celebrate the unique heritages and stories they have to share. Hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington, An Evening in Celebration of Mexico and the Latin American Diaspora will feature some of the best musicians from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, as well as members of the community at large. Green Drinks Bloomington @ Upland Brewing Company, Banquet Facility, 350 W 11th St, Bloomington @ Upland Brewery
Jan 25 @ 6:00 pm

Green Drinks Bloomington is a lively, informal social networking event for people from all walks of life who are interested in making a greener world.  Folks gather every month to share libations and ideas, discuss, debate, explore and make new friends and business connections.

On Wednesday, January 25 at 6 pm Bill Jones, Sassafras Audubon Society Board Member and SPEA Clinical Professor Emeritus, will present a talk entitled “Why Free-roaming Domestic Cats are Bad for Birds”. The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute estimates that free-roaming domestic house cats kill an estimated 1.4 to 3.7 BILLION birds in the U.S. annually.  This represents more than 10% of all adult land birds living in the U.S.  Domestic cats are the second-largest source of bird mortality; far outweighing other causes such as building strikes, wind turbines, and natural causes.  There are several proven things that responsible cat owners can do to prevent this needless slaughter.  We will discuss these solutions and why outdoor life is hazardous to your pet cat during the January Green Drinks gathering.

Green Drinks Bloomington is held the 4th Wednesday of the month through October from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Banquet Facility of the Upland Brewing Company. There’s a $5 suggested donation, some food will be provided. To receive a monthly reminder, write [email protected].  To learn more about Green Drinks visit www.greendrinks.org.

Salaam with Istanbul Breeze, Players’ Pub, 424 S. Walnut St., Bloomington, IN
Jan 27 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Salaam has delighted audiences for years with its expansive repertoire of Middle Eastern and North African music. Salaam is true to the traditions, informing the uninitiated, and evoking nostalgia in listeners who are familiar with the art form. What sets Salaam apart is the versatility of its musicians, whose deep knowledge of Eastern and Western styles gives them the flexibility to move effortlessly between genres. Iraqi-American band leader Dena El Saffar’s compositions take advantage her own eclectic musical upbringing to create a sound rooted in maqam (the modal system used throughout the Middle East), with tasteful forays into Latin, African, Balkan, Rock, Blues, and Classical styles .
