He won’t argue with this.

Join in the Winter in the Woods festivities and participate in the Winter Hike! Hike on one of two self-guided trails at the Brown County State Park; starting points at the Nature Center and Recreational Hall. Along both routes, DNR interpreters will greet hikers with winter wildlife facts and Local Boy Scout Troop 190 will prepare s’mores for a welcomed hiker snack. Warm drinks will also be available at the Abe Martin Lodge. Donations accepted.
Southern Loop Hike (3.5 miles): Beginning at the Nature Center, hikers begin on a closed park road past breathtaking Hohen point, into Strahl Valley then around Lake Strahl. Return to the Nature Center via Trail #6.
Woodland Hike (2.75 miles): Beginning at the park’s Recreation Building and proceeding through Ogle Hollow Nature Preserve (Trail #5), around Lake Ogle (Trail #7), and returning to the Recreation Building.
Enjoy Breakfast with the Naturalists at 7 a.m. before the hike and then dig in to the Hiker’s Lunch Buffet from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. after the hike. Both will be at the Little Gem Restaurant at Abe Martin Lodge and the cost is menu prices.

In conjunction with the Brown County Visitors Bureau and Brown County State Park’s “Winter in the Woods” weekend the 6th annual “Frosty Trails 5 Mile” is a fun 5.2 mile trail run (or walk if you like) on the scenic trails of Brown County State Park. After the run join us in the shelter house for a warm fire, warm food, warm drinks, and best of all warm friends sharing tails of the trails.

The City of Bloomington along with the Council of Neighborhood Associations and IU’s Division of Student Affairs are hosting an Open House/Meet & Greet on Saturday, January 14, 2017, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Atrium of City Hall, 401 N. Morton St. Light refreshments will be provided. The public is encouraged to attend.

A poignant tale of the trials of love performed by Alchymy Viols and guests. Directed by Catherine Turocy, director of New York Baroque Dance Company.
A project written by Phil Spray and Catherine Turocy in the form of 17th century masque entertainment: The concert will include vocal and instrumental music by Cavalli, Cima, Benedetto Ferrari, Monteverdi, and G. Strozzi, using a variety of instruments, dance, costume, drama.

The Watsons Go to Brimingham is a family-friendly film based on the young adult novel of the same name. It tells the story of an African-American family from Flint, Michigan who travel to Alabama in 1963 and experience the shock of the Jim Crow South. The film is appropriate for children nine and above, although families with younger children may also judge the content appropriate.

Join us for dinner, a movie, music and a cause!
After a brief moving tribute to Dr. King, we will screen the film Time to Choose, an in-depth hopeful look at climate problems and solutions. Nine local groups will provide brief snapshots of their strategies to combat climate change on the local, state, and national level. Nationally-known singer and songwriter Carrie Newcomer will lead us in song and a light dinner will be provided. Join us for a warm and inspiring evening!

Starting January 16, Moms’ Monday, our new moms group, will be held in The Baby Space at the Monroe County Library on every first and third Monday of the month from 10 am to noon. This space is a separate, fully enclosed room designed just for the needs of babies who are not yet walking, and their caregivers.
This group is a drop-in style. It is open to moms and their babies who are not yet walking. Please note that older children are not permitted in The Baby Space.
Please join us for a fun family service project to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. and literacy! Materials will be supplied to make simple booklets from recycled materials. The session will include materials for artwork, help with labels/stories in English/Spanish, cover design, bookbinding, etc. Participants will be able to make a book for themselves and/or a book to share with students in Cuba. Snacks provided!
During the workshop, we will provide information about MLK Jr. and local community members who have worked for peace and equity in Bloomington such as Ernest Butler, Ellen Brantlinger, and Lucille Bertuccio. Participants will be guided in making short (8-12 page) booklets with images around peace, justice, equity, and diversity. We will also provide materials for a group collage project for anyone who wants to contribute to a community art project. This year our speaker will be Adam Foss, a fierce advocate for criminal justice reform and supporter of the importance prosecutors have in ending mass incarceration. Adam graduated Cum Laude from Suffolk University Law School and became a prosecutor to make a positive difference in his community. Adam is a founder of several programs that help to improve the justice system, such as the Roxbury CHOICE program, the SCDAO reading program and is currently developing a new diversion program for first-time juvenile offenders. Not only did he speak at TED, he also recieved The Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly Excellence in the Law Up-and-Coming Lawyer Award and The National Law Journal Up-and Coming Lawyer Award in 2015.
In 2016 a writing class at IU teamed up with the residents of Crawford Homes, a program that provides permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless people. Eleven residents teamed up with two students each to write their life stories. Not only did we learn about their diverse and fascinating backgrounds, but also about the ways that we are all the same, as people who grow, work, and love. Please join us to screen the documentary about the project and the effects it had on its participants.
Please bring a donation of a new, quality hygiene product or house cleaning product to help stock the pantry at Crawford Homes. Items from the pantry are used to reward residents for helping their neighbors or participating in activities.
Children ages 6 to 9 will discover how to see with their hands in the enlightening program All About Braille. They will try reading Braille and learn how Braille was created. It’s a fun program the kids will love.

The Animal Control Commission is a citizen’s commission charged with:
- Formulating, adopting and implementing policies, principles, and standards for humane treatment and control of all animals in the city.
- Reviewing the decisions and actions of the senior animal control officer in any matter related to the enforcement of chapter 2.12.010 of the Bloomington Municipal Code.
- Making recommendations to the mayor of the city as to necessary ordinances concerning the care, treatment and control of animals.

One World, One Bloomington: An Evening in Celebration of Mexico and the Latin American Diaspora focuses on our diverse, ever united community in these divisive times. A peaceful, positive protest in response to the upcoming Inauguration, this event will feature folk music, poetry readings, classical music, popular music and dancing from the heart of the Latin American tradition, encouraging solidarity within the Latino population of Bloomington, Latino students of Indiana University, and our Allies. Speakers will share their personal stories, highlighting the immigrant experience—each tale as unique as a fingerprint.
An Evening in Celebration of Mexico and the Latin American Diaspora will take place at 6pm on Friday, January 20 th , 2017 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington, 2120 North Fee Lane, Bloomington, IN 47408. This event is free and open to the general public.
Settlers who came to Bloomington named it after the “haven of blooms” they found upon arrival. Bloomington remains a welcome home for blooms of many diverse cultures, which make up the whole of the United States. Though Americans speak over 300 languages, music, the universal language, binds us together. On January 20 th , get to know your Latin American neighbors and celebrate the unique heritages and stories they have to share. Hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington, An Evening in Celebration of Mexico and the Latin American Diaspora will feature some of the best musicians from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, as well as members of the community at large. Come out, Bloomington, and listen, smile, dance, share and celebrate with your community!
