City Council Wrangling Over Hospital Purchase

Play

In its meeting last night, the Bloomington City Council again took up an agreement between the city and IU Health to buy the IU health hospital site on Second Street. The city does not yet have specific redevelopment plans for the site.

Urban planners from the nationally-renowned Urban Land Institute presented various recommendations for the site’s reuse last Friday. Those include the creation of affordable housing, a community center, and expanded medical. However, the agreement stipulates that the property cannot not be sold to a competing hospital system or healthcare provider.  The council gave the agreement an unanimous vote of support for the agreement on its second reading last night.
