Indiana Could Loosen Grip On Teaching Licenses

Last week, the Senate Education and Career Development Committee heard arguments on proposed legislation that would change the way Indiana public school teachers receive their practitioner licenses. Under current law, teaching licenses are issued only by the Indiana Department of Education. Senate Bill 409 would amend this process to allow schools, such as Indiana University’s School of Education, to issue initial practitioner licenses to new teachers. WFHB Reporter David Murphy spoke on the phone with Gerardo Gonzalez, the Dean of the School of Education.
