WFHB spoke with Eric Nauman of the Purdue Neurotrauma Group in June 2012 after the group released a study that found that concussions could be the result of several blows to the head over time, rather than one single blow to the head. One observation made during that study was that about 50 percent of players suffered brain damage visible in fMRIs, even if they did not display symptoms of a concussion. During that interview, Nauman said the group was working on a new helmet liner that they hoped would reduce the amount of force football players’ heads would take when tackled. A prototype of that liner has been produced. Correspondent Cleveland Dietz spoke with Nauman about the head injuries in football and how their new liner could help for today’s WFHB feature exclusive.
