BloomingOUT – Liz Watson Interview – August 2nd, 2018

Play

Here on BloomingOUT we have a lot of insanity to report on tonight. Much is happening in Washington D.C that is directly affecting our LGBTQ community. It is important to stay informed and continue to be united as a community. I always go back to what my Aunt Carol told me after we won the right for marriage equality. She said celebrate now and celebrate big because you have a heck of a fight ahead.

Our featured guest is Liz Watson, the democratic candidate running to represent Indiana’s ninth district in Congress. She is a fifth-generation Hoosier and a graduate of Georgetown Law School. She hass served as the director of workplace justice at the National Women’s Law Center, as the executive director of the Georgetown Poverty Center, and as the Labor Policy Director for Democrats in the United States Congress. Liz announced she was running for congress in July 2017, and convincingly defeated the other Democrats she was facing in the May 8th primary, garnering nearly 70% of the vote. She will now face Republican Incumbent Trey Hollingsworth in this year’s midterm general election on November 6th!

In this episode of BloomingOUT, we are debuting our new weekly segment featuring coming-out stories from around Bloomington, Indiana, the nation and from around the globe.  For some, coming out is simple; for others, it may be a little more complex. Whatever your story is, we would like to hear from you, our listeners. If you have an interesting – or not so interesting story – to share please contact us at [email protected]. Keep an eye out for the  BloomingOUT team at Bloomington Pride taking place August 25th this year and come tell us your story!

Featured music this week comes from Tune-Yards’ 2018 album I can feel you creep into my Private Life.

Events:

Your Trans Best Friend! Ask Me Anything @ Monroe County Library Room 1C
Aug 2 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Let me be your trans best friend, come, drop in to room 1C at the Monroe County Main Library, ask me ANY question or ton of questions you have about transgender and intersex people. I will answer to the best of my abilities given my 43 years as an intersex trans female and 21 years as an out trans woman. I’d like to especially encourage healthcare workers, human resource people, parents, educators, law enforcement and other first responders, and people of any faith tradition to come by and lay it all out there. I have heard just about everything, and will not be offended or shocked. My goal is to be able to dispell myths and fill in the blanks with honest, direct information and a bit of humour.

Share this with anyone you think may be interested. Come by any time between 6 and 9. It’s a drop-in session, not a lecture. I’ll have some cookies to share, too.
