Indiana Republicans Move to Make Abortion Unconstitutional

Indiana Republicans approved a plank, during their party convention last weekend in Evansville, which aims to make abortion a constitutional issue.

A “Plank” is the term often given to the components of a political platform – the opinions and viewpoints about individual topics, as held by a party.

The Republican party convention delegates approved a plank, which reads “We believe in the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death, and that the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee that no one can be deprived of life, liberty or property deliberately echoes the proclamation made in the Declaration of Independence that ‘all’ are ‘endowed by their Creator’ with the inalienable right to life. Accordingly, We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental right to life which cannot be infringed.”

The Indiana Republican Party Delegates also decided to keep in 2016 convention language, defining marriage as between a man and a woman. That plank was up for debate, after an Indianapolis Republican political consultant made a motion to remove the definition from the state party’s platform. Delegates on Friday voted overwhelmingly to keep that language, which was introduced in 2016, during the tenure of Governor Mike Pence.
