Update: Acoustic Roots Festival

TR.jpeg

Due to circumstances beyond our control, headliner Eilen Jewell had a change of tour plans and cannot perform at Acoustic Roots as originally planned. Tom Roznowski and his band have joined the festival line-up, as well as Wildflowers (Suzette Weakley and Andrea Augustine). Admission has been reduced to $5 at the gate. Please help us quickly update this event in all media listings and preview features. We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to a great day of music in Brown County to raise funds for Community Radio in South Central Indiana.

WFHB names new assistant news director

Bloomington Community Radio, WFHB, announces the hiring of January Jones as the station’s new assistant news director.

“We’re delighted to have January on board,” said WFHB news director Chad Carrothers. “Having another staffer in the news department will help us expand our already substantial coverage of local news, and bring a fresh perspective to that coverage.”

WFHB members elect three directors

Participating members of Bloomington Community Radio (WFHB) have elected three members to their board of directors.

At their annual June meeting, members elected Brown County resident Pam Raider, Bloomington Realtor Suzette Weakley, and Monroe County businessman Kirby Thompson to three-year terms on the organization’s board.  Raider will be serving her first full term on the board, after being appointed to serve last year.  “These directors bring a wide range of experience, expertise, and contacts to the organization,” said WFHB General Manager Will Murphy.  “I will be depending on them and their fellow directors to help take WFHB to the next level in the coming year. We have a lot of challenges, but that means a lot of opportunities.”

WFHB Board appoints new member

The WFHB board of directors has selected Jonathon Schuster to fill the unexpired term of board member Jason Nickey. Jason stepped down earlier this year, but remains a programmer and an underwriter for the station.

Jonathon is a free-lance marketing consultant and an MBA student at the Kelley School of Business. He was raised in northern Indiana, and has spent nearly a decade in Bloomington. Jonathon has worked in the financial services sector, marketing, and small business/new venture development. He's also a former late-night radio host for WIUX, and describes himself as an indie rock and alt-country fan, "especially of groups such as the Impossible Shapes and Uncle Tupelo."

WFHB wins state journalism award!

Chad Carrothers here, in Indianapolis at the annual awards banquet of the Society of Professional Journalists. I am proud to announce WFHB has just won first place in the category of Best Social Justice Reporting! This is for a piece on generational homelessness exploring the story of a father and son who have found that being homeless together has bonded them in a way that transcends typical father-son relationships.  You can listen to it by CLICKING HERE
This feature report was produced at WFHB for the 2008 National Homelessness Marathon and aired on hundreds of stations.  Our 2009 report was even better so we'll be sure to submit that piece for next year's awards.

"Border Radio" show now available on-line

On March 27th, WFHB offered the "WFHB Radio Extravaganza: An Evening With Border Radio" at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. If you weren't able to make the performance, you can listen to it on-line:

"Colonel" Mike Kelsey hosted the show, along with the ever-popular Arbutus Cunningham. The inimitable Richard Fish served as both director and announcer. The program features Jeni & Billy, a marvellous Appalachian-folk duo from Nashville, Tennessee, and a bunch of great Bloomington musical talent, including Cathi Norton, Art Heckman, Jason Fickel, the Firehouse Gospel Singers, and our house jazz band, Dennis Riggins and the Firehouse Swing Thing.
