Ellettsville Town Council

At the Ellettsville Town Council meeting on October 14, a town resident raised concerns about the possibility of data centers being built in the community due to a proposed zoning map amendment.

Resident Scott Reynolds warned that while these tech developments may seem enticing, they ultimately harm the community. He says data centers don’t make good neighbors.

Data centers are flocking to Indiana due to the state’s tax incentives, quick development timelines, and centralized location. As of June 2024, Indiana had 38 data centers and that number is expected to rise.

Council President William Ellis asked Reynolds if he knew any remedies to lessen the impact of data centers on residents. Reynolds responded that there are none.

Reynolds emphasized that residents often don’t learn about data centers moving into their community until it’s too late. He noted that developers and tech companies have a playbook to enter communities quickly.

He urged the Town Council to question the developers harder than the Planning Committee had. He argues that if developers avoid answering questions, they likely don’t have the community’s best interest in mind.

The zoning map amendment ordinance was tabled for discussion at the next Ellettsville Town Council meeting which will be held on October 28th.

Board Member Kari Essary asked about the increasing assessed value. Lettelier responded saying that the growth is due to the increasing residential and commercial property tax revenue.

The next Monroe County Public Library Board of Trustees meeting will be held on November 20th.
