Police Arrested Three Teenagers on Tuesday, Care Not Cages Releases Statement
Bloomington police arrested three Black teenagers on Tuesday near West 13th Street and North Illinois Street.
According to an email from Bloomington Police Department Captain Ryan Pedigo, officers responded to the area after reports of a fight in progress. Police ended up arresting one 13-year-old and two 14-year-olds who were referred to juvenile probation.
Pedigo said that a security guard patrolling the area pointed out two males claiming they had been involved in a fight and one of the teenagers had displayed what appeared to be a handgun. Officers later discovered it was an Orbeez toy replica of a Glock handgun.
WFHB News obtained a video of the arrest being made from a source who wishes to remain anonymous. In the clip, you can hear an officer accuse one of the teenagers’ family members of being “too angry.” The family member responds, “I’m not angry. I’m scared.” We will now play an audio clip from that video.
Police reported that one of the teenagers complained of shortness of breath while driving to the police department. An ambulance was called. While being assessed by the ambulance crew, a car with members of the detained teenager’s family arrived on the scene. This led to the arrest of a 14-year old female.
Local activist group Care Not Cages released a statement on Wednesday denouncing the incident calling police violence inflicted on a child. The statement said, “We call out the racism that makes so many Americans, especially police, unable to see Black children as children.”

The statement went on to say, “This event’s ugly reminder of local racism and police violence is a particularly bitter irony given the proximity to the day the nation celebrates its supposed independence and liberty. Happy July 4th, indeed.”
All in all, the teenagers were referred to juvenile probation on the following charges:
- 13-year-old male: Two counts of Intimidation, level 6 felony; Resisting Law Enforcement Resulting in Injury, level 6 felony.
- 14-year-old male: Resisting Law Enforcement Resulting in Injury, level 6 felony.
- 14-year-old female: Intimidation, level 6 felony; Unlawful Encroachment, class C misdemeanor; Resisting Law Enforcement, class A misdemeanor.
This story is still developing. Stay tuned next week for more coverage on the WFHB Local News.
Monroe County Government Offices Closed Until Next Monday

Monroe County Government offices will be closed Wednesday through Friday.
According to county officials, a “technological event” caused its servers to be inaccessible. The county says it has affected most but not all of its departments.
A county press release notes that the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has not faced a disruption of law enforcement services.
The press release, put out on July 2nd, said “We have elicited outside professional help, and we hope to be in better standing later this week. At this time, we are not commenting any further until a full analysis of our network and servers is complete. We apologize for this inconvenience to our community, our departments, our employees, and our vendors. When we have something available for sharing, we will provide that as soon as possible.”
Monroe County offices will reopen on Monday, July 8th.
CBU Issues Precautionary Boil Advisory for 74 Addresses

The City of Bloomington Utilities department has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for 74 addresses.
On Wednesday, CBU crews were dispatched to repair a broken drinking water main at the intersection of North Maple Street and West 15th Street, according to a city news release.
74 addresses are now under a precautionary Boil Water Advisory until noon tomorrow.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management requires all public water systems to initiate the boil water advisory if pressure drops below 20 psi in the water main. If you’re impacted, you should follow these steps recommended by IDEM.
- Immediately after your normal water pressure is restored, run COLD water from a sink or tub until clear water flows from the faucet.
- Boil all water used for drinking, cooking, and oral hygiene for at least 5 minutes prior to consumption.
- It is not necessary to boil water for other uses.
To find out if your address was affected, you can visit bloomington.in.gov/utilities. For more information, you can contact Bloomington Utilities at 812-339-1444.
