But first, your daily headlines:
Monroe County Public Library Board of Trustees

At the Monroe County Public Library Board of Trustees meeting on July 17th, Director of Public Services Josh Wolf shared the Director’s Monthly Report on the state of the library and its programming.
Next, the board discussed the conclusion of the Covid Leave Policy. Human Resources Director Becky Throckmorton spoke on the decision to end the policy.
Board Member Chris Hull asked about the numbers of Covid-19 in the community, and how staff decided it was a good time to terminate the policy. Throckmorton responded.
Throckmorton then proceeded to explain the Pilot Policy Proposal for Contagious Illness Leave for 15 to 18 hour employees.
Board President Christine Harrison asked if doctor’s appointments would count toward the policy, Throckmorton said that it wouldn’t but they could take unpaid leave for that without penalty.
The board approved the pilot policy.
The next Monroe County Public Library Board of Trustees meeting will be held on August 21st.
Feature Reports:

Up next, local journalist Dave Askins of the B Square Bulletin provides his weekly editorial on the WFHB Local News. For more, we turn to Dave Askins.

The City of Bloomington launched a community heat survey to address extreme heat challenges in the community caused by climate change. The survey will close on August 1st. In today’s feature report, WFHB News spoke with Assistant Director of Sustainability for the City Shawn Miya. We turn now to that segment.

WFHB News is proud to partner with The Media School at Indiana University to offer internships and volunteer opportunities in broadcast journalism. Earlier this month The Media School hosted the High School Journalism Institute, drawing hundreds of students from all over the country to Bloomington for a week of intense workshops. WFHB hosted the podcasting workshop, where students produced new episodes of Activate!, our weekly feature spotlighting people working for positive change in our community. This week’s episode was produced by Maggie Russell and Trent Josleyn.
Trent earned our “Audioslinger Award” for best technical production skills and Maggie was our HSJI “Producer of the Year.” Their episode features Lesley Davis from Bloomington’s Council for Community Accessibility, a volunteer group that advocates for the interests of people with disabilities. For Lesley the Council for Community Accessibility is more than volunteer work – it also ties into her own lived experience. As a wheelchair user she sees every day where Bloomington is accessible and where it is not, and she’s on a mission to make our town user-friendly for all. The CCA’s latest project is a new ordinance requiring TVs in local businesses to have the closed captioning turned on. Find out more on a new episode of Activate!, coming your way right now on the WFHB Local News.
