Bloomington City Council
The Bloomington City Council met on December 4th, 2024. During committee reports, Council Member Sydney Zulich gave a report on the Elected Officials Salary Committee. Zulich is the chair of the committee and walked through the committee’s thought process on raising salaries for the elected city officials for 2025.
Zulich explained that from her experience as a council member, it is hard to maintain a full time job in addition to the significant workload the council position requires. However, after hearing from the public, she said they ended up going with a lower pay raise that followed the five guiding principles they had established.
The council will hold a special session on December 10th to further discuss the ordinance to fix elected officers salaries.
Later in the meeting, council members deliberated on a resolution incorporating the Safe Streets for All Safety Action Plan. According to council documents, the plan intends to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by crashes. Chief Deputy Clerk Sofia McDowell said the safe streets initiative would be a part of the city’s transportation plan.
Council Member Hopi Stosberg asked how the city would work with local school systems with the Safe Streets plan. Planning Services Manager Ryan Roblins said they have been in communication with M-C-C-S-C schools.
Council Member Dave Rollo inquired on what role the council would plan when it comes to significant modifications to roadways. Robling responded.
Rollo followed up, clarifying that this wasn’t always under the domain of the city’s engineering department. Director of Engineering Andrew Cibor walked through the history and explained how this would impact the council’s role moving forward.
Council President Isabel Piedmont Smith asked about the public engagement element of the plan. Cibor said the city hopes to better engage the public on the matter.
The council voted unanimously in support of the resolution. The city council will meet again for its next regular session on December 11th.
