This is the WFHB Local News for Thursday, August 22nd, 2024.

Later in the program, we have Civic Conversations – a collaboration between WFHB and the League of Women Voters of Bloomington and Monroe County. More in the bottom half of our program.

Also coming up in the next half hour, we have coverage of the Democratic National Convention which wraps up today in Chicago.

The Statehouse Roundup

The Statehouse Roundup is a brief, weekly segment focusing on Indiana news and politics. Tune in each Thursday during the WFHB Local News to hear a recap on news and politics on the state level.

A former aide to previous Vice President Mike Pence endorsed Kamala Harris for president last night at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Troye served as Homeland Security and Counterterrorism advisor under Pence. Troye outlined why she’s supporting Harris over Trump.

She elaborated on her experience for the last administration saying that working under Trump’s White House was “terrifying.”

Also speaking at the DNC yesterday was Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana. He currently serves in the Biden Administration as transportation secretary.

In his speech, Buttigieg discussed his roots growing up in Indiana and how he’s seen a cultural transformation as a result of politics during his lifetime.

Buttigieg ran for president in 2020. His name was brought up as a potential vice presidential pick before Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Today marks the final day of the DNC. Vice President Kamala Harris will accept the Democratic Party’s nomination tonight in Chicago.

Up next, WFHB Correspondent Janek Schaller reports on a march against the Democratic National Convention. The message of the march: fighting for the rights and liberation of oppressed people and against the exploitation of workers. For more, we turn to Janek Schaller.

In today’s feature report, we have Civic Conversations – a collaboration between WFHB and the League of Women Voters of Bloomington and Monroe County. This month, Civic Conversations is talking to Mark Fraley, the associate director of PACE, the Political and Civic Engagement Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University, and Pearl Vinnard, an IU PACE student, to speak on the Big Ten Voting Challenge.

Because young people vote in smaller numbers than typical voters, the Big Ten Voting Challenge was created to help foster increased participation by young adults in democratic engagement throughout the Big Ten. This is done by promoting voter registration, turnout, and nonpartisan education while assisting students in finding and using their voices as active, engaged citizens. According to Fraley, BTVC has helped increase voter turnout through nonpartisan voter education and registering students to vote. We turn now to the latest edition of Civic Conversations on the WFHB Local News.
