A new area organization advocating for LGBTQ rights is launching in South Central Indiana.

The Stonewall Democrats of South Central Indiana are holding will publicly launch next weekend. The newly-formed Political Action Committee seeks to serve the interests of LGBTQ people in Owen, Greene, Morgan, Monroe, Lawrence and Brown counties.

The Stonewall Democrats are a national organization, affiliated with the Democratic Party, named after the 1969 Stonewall riots, which were crucial to the inception of the gay civil rights movement.

The statewide Stonewall Democrats raise money for candidates and organize events at the state level, according to their website. Committee President William E. Smith III said the new South Central Indiana chapter will focus its impact on local communities and the state.

Next weekend’s kickoff will feature six speakers, including the chair of the Monroe County Democratic Party and two keynote speakers, according to a press release. Smith said he believes these speakers will bring attendees an engaging glimpse at the status of LGBTQ civil rights work in the community today.

The Stonewall Democrats of South Central Indiana’s Kickoff takes place Saturday, June 15, at Bloomington City Hall.
