Today’s episode features two stories By Carolyn Geduld, “The Protestor” and “Rabbit.”
Carolyn Geduld writes what she terms psychological fiction: fiction which forefronts the protagonist’s motivation, especially unconscious motivation, stemming from childhood trauma or influences. The impetus for “The Protestor” was the Black Lives Matter protests. Her interest is in entering the heads of clueless people who are often amusing in a grim way. “Rabbit” is an early chapter of the first draft of an unfinished novel about a teen girl seduced by her high school teacher. The locale was inspired by the neighborhood where Carolyn grew up in Queens, New York.
Carolyn began writing in a mad streak that has lasted about five years, winding up with thirty-five published stories and four published novels. The impetus for that “streak” seems to have come from so many “life events” happening in the same period: she retired, was widowed, moved, bought an RV, and was given a puppy, and then there was the pandemic. Perhaps one of these or all of these triggered what felt like creative madness. “Who knows?,” she says.
