Early in the illness, sometimes it was just a matter of him using an odd word, but you could still make out his meaning. In the car, going to pick up my nephew from football practice. Dad was at the wheel, still driving then. “The picture is golden” he said. Hmm. It was a beautiful day. That must be what he meant. “Yes,” I replied. “It is.” I didn’t point out the mistake. “The picture is golden” has stayed with me, a small sign of what was beginning to happen in his brain. Poetic in its own way.
ABOUT the author
Jane Goodman is on the faculty of the Department of Anthropology at Indiana University, where she teaches courses on performance, intertextuality, power and violence, and identity and difference, with particular focus on North Africa and the Middle East. She is a singer of world music, having performed for more than two decades with Libana and Kaia.
