An honored academician writing on horror and the “avant-garde,” Joan Hawkins returned to creative writing just over a decade ago. Almost all of her writing begins with a memory that nags at her. Once she writes it down she sees the larger story and the re-writing begins. In all of her stories the detail used to create a sense of time and place seem to put the reader into the story, making discoveries along with the author.
In this episode of Speaking of Stories, we’ll hear Hawkins reading two pieces from her book School and Suicide: “God and Joe DiMaggio” and “My First Cappuccino.”
Here’s a link to the text of “God and Joe DiMaggio” at Alien Buddha Press.
