BloomingOUT – The Christmas Without a Santa Claus (in Spencer, Indiana) – December 19th, 2019

Play

This week in Spencer, Indiana, Owen County Commissioners voted on a proposed ordinance that will outlaw events in and on the lawn of the Courthouse entirely. It all started with a complaint was made to the Owen County Commissioners to outlaw events that might be considered “lewd” or inappropriate for children, in what appeared to be a complaint against Spencer Pride Festival. Several members of the community came forward to the hearings; reportedly County Commissioners tried to ask community members to leave the room for the vote. The proposal was revised to ban all events on Courthouse/county property altogether and it was passed with a majority vote. There will be no more Santa Claus, no more drag queens, no more apple butter festivals on Owen County government property.

Melanie had a conversation with Jacob Balash from Spencer Pride, Inc, about the proposal and the community’s reaction. After that, we have Justin Robertson back with us to discuss. We also discuss another story about the removal of LGBTQ Books from Kalamazoo Reading Program and how it might even reflect our own reading programs in Monroe County schools.
